(Kuching, 9th) Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board today held a constructive meeting with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) and representatives from various taxi associations in Kuching to discuss several important measures to improve traffic management and revitalize the taxi industry.
A key consensus reached during the meeting was the establishment of a new taxi waiting area.
This initiative will not only help alleviate traffic congestion at and around the airport but also provide a dedicated waiting area for e-hailing vehicles. Through more orderly traffic arrangements, it is hoped to comprehensively enhance the riding experience for passengers, whether they are taxi or e-hailing car users.
The meeting also explored broader strategies for revitalizing taxi services.
Although e-hailing services are becoming increasingly popular, many people still rely on traditional taxi services. Therefore, the Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board will actively assist in the revival of the taxi industry to rebuild public confidence.
The board's chairman, Kong Feng Nian, pointed out that to achieve this goal, the authorities will strengthen enforcement to ensure that taxis, lorries, buses, and e-hailing vehicles comply with relevant regulations.
“We particularly emphasize that taxi operators must use meters for fare calculation, which is a legal requirement. However, some operators have not adhered to this in the past.”
To reduce the financial burden on taxi drivers for installing meters in vehicles and to align with modern trends, the board will introduce a new measure: integrating the fare calculation function into the mobile application of e-hailing platforms. This move not only helps drivers expand their customer base but also enhances overall service levels and restores public trust through transparent charging methods.
Although some operators initially have reservations about the new measures, the overall consensus recognizes the necessity of improving services, strengthening competitiveness, and implementing transparent pricing. Jiāng Fēngnián also thanked taxi operators for their willingness to work with the authorities to move towards a common goal.
Moving forward, the Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board will continue to maintain close contact with taxi associations across Sarawak to promote relevant initiatives to ensure the sustainable development of the taxi industry in the future.
