(Russia, 26th) Russian state-owned enterprise Rosatom has received messages from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other international partners, indicating that the United States is willing to cooperate with Russia on the issue of external power transmission from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev said on Thursday (December 25) that Rosatom is not directly involved in negotiations with the US, but has received the information indirectly through the IAEA and foreign partners. He stated that Rosatom is ready to engage in international cooperation on issues such as supplying electricity from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to large energy users.
Likhachev said that in the future, a portion of electricity from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant may be supplied to Ukraine, but the specific amount would need to be determined through negotiations. He also said that only the Russian operating agency can be responsible for the safety and operation of Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
According to a Ukrainian media report on Wednesday (24th), Ukrainian President Zelensky announced a 20-point latest draft of the Russia-Ukraine 'peace plan' at a press briefing, which mentioned that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant would be jointly operated by Ukraine, the US, and Russia.
However, Zelensky said Ukraine and the United States have not reached an agreement on how to manage and operate the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is one of the largest in Europe. After the Ukraine crisis escalated in February 2022, the Russian side took control of the plant. Since then, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been repeatedly shelled or attacked by drones, raising international concerns over its safety.
