(United States, 26th) On Thursday evening (December 25), US President Trump posted on social media, stating at the request of the Nigerian government, the United States launched an airstrike against the extremist group 'Islamic State' militants in northwestern Nigeria. The US Africa Command confirmed this news shortly afterward.
According to Reuters, on the 25th Trump posted on Truth Social, "Tonight, as Commander in Chief of the US Armed Forces, I ordered a strong and lethal strike against ISIS (Islamic State) terrorists in northwestern Nigeria."
Trump pointed out that Islamic State 'terrorists have been brutally killing innocent Christians,' saying he had warned that these terrorists would pay a heavy price.
Trump also stated that the United States 'will never allow radical Islamic terrorism to breed and spread.'
The US Africa Command, headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, said that on the same day, under the orders of Trump and US Secretary of War Hergeseth, the US military coordinated with the Nigerian side to launch airstrikes in Nigeria's Sokoto state, targeting multiple Islamic State camps. Preliminary assessments indicate that several terrorists were killed.
The US military said Christians in the region have been consistent targets of Islamic State attacks.
The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on the X platform that this airstrike is part of ongoing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, including intelligence sharing and strategic coordination, aimed at combating armed organizations.
The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: "The airstrike conducted precise attacks on terrorist targets in the northwest."
A video released by the Pentagon showed at least one shell being fired from a warship. A US defense official said the target of the airstrike was multiple militants located in a known Islamic State camp.
