(Kuching, 26th) A delegation of three from the Guangdong Province Southeast Asia (Kuala Lumpur) Economic and Trade Office, led by Director Zhang Junhong, recently visited the Sarawak Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI), where they were warmly received by SCCCI Vice President Dato Wong Kuo Hui. Both parties engaged in in-depth discussions on deepening economic and trade cooperation, industrial alignment, and regional development opportunities between Guangdong and Sarawak.

Accompanying the exchange meeting were SCCCI’s Digital Economy Group Director Wong Un Cai, Kuching Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Malaysia-China Economic and Trade Group Director Zhang Guangfu, and Business Group Deputy Director Cai Minglong, among others.

During the exchange, Dato Wong Kuo Hui pointed out that Guangdong Province, as one of China’s most dynamic, open, and well-developed manufacturing provinces, has long been an important economic and trade partner for Malaysia, especially Sarawak.

With the ongoing advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative, and the continual deepening of China-ASEAN cooperation, Sarawak is ushering in unprecedented development opportunities in green energy, digital economy, agricultural processing, infrastructure, and high-tech industries.

He noted that in recent years, Sarawak has been actively promoting green economic transformation and vigorously developing hydrogen energy, digital economy, and high value-added industries. In the future, there will be broad cooperation prospects between Sarawak and Guangdong in technological innovation, industrial park cooperation, smart city development, and talent exchange.

"Guangdong boasts a robust industrial chain, scientific and technological strength, and international market experience, while Sarawak has abundant natural resources, a stable investment environment, and the advantage of being in the ASEAN region. If both parties can further strengthen their ties, they will surely realize resource complementarity and achieve mutual benefit and win-win outcomes."

At the meeting, Zhang Junhong shared the achievements of recent economic and trade cooperation between Guangdong and Malaysia, and introduced Guangdong's current business environment, industrial upgrading direction, and key investment attraction sectors.

He pointed out that Guangdong Province attaches great importance to its cooperation with ASEAN countries, and Malaysia, as one of China’s important partners in ASEAN, has maintained close trade relations with Guangdong for the long term.

He said that Guangdong hopes to establish closer ties with Sarawak in the future, including promoting mutual business visits, industrial collaboration, trade and investment exchanges, and further expanding business cooperation platforms between the two regions.

“Sarawak has a superior geographical location and rich resources, coupled with its recent proactive push for modernization and digital transformation, resulting in immense potential. We hope that through this visit, the mutual understanding and connections between enterprises on both sides will be strengthened, leading to the implementation of more pragmatic cooperation projects.”

During the exchange, both sides also exchanged views on topics such as digital economy, artificial intelligence applications, cross-border e-commerce, green energy, education and training, and youth entrepreneurship. Both agreed on the need to strengthen long-term communication mechanisms between chambers of commerce in both places to promote more people-to-people and enterprise-level interactions and cooperation.

Dato Wong Kuo Hui also took the opportunity to introduce SCCCI’s proactive approach to promoting international economic and trade exchanges in recent years and emphasized the important bridge role played by Sarawak’s Chinese business community in fostering Malaysia-China grassroots friendship and economic cooperation.

He believes that, amidst the constantly changing global economic landscape, strengthening regional cooperation and connectivity will help enterprises expand into larger markets and inject new vitality into the two regions’ economies.

The atmosphere during this visit and exchange was cordial, and both parties look forward to continuously deepening ties in the future and jointly promoting Guangdong-Sarawak economic and trade cooperation to a higher level.
