KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim may attend the Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit scheduled for Sept 14 and 15 in Doha, Qatar, following Israel’s recent airstrike on the city.

Anwar said he received the invitation from Islamic leaders in Doha yesterday morning.

“Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim Hamad Al Thani, also requested my presence. So, if the meeting is held on Sept 15, then most likely I will attend.

“However, if it is held on Sept 16, which is Malaysia Day, I must be here for the celebration,” he told reporters after chairing the Sarawak Keadilan State Leadership Council (MPN) meeting at Grand Margherita Hotel on Thursday.

On Tuesday, Israel shocked the Middle East when it launched an airstrike in Doha targeting the offices of senior Hamas leaders. Powerful explosions were reported in the Leqtaifiya and Katara areas, with thick smoke seen billowing into the sky.

Anwar said the summit would also discuss the latest developments in Gaza and the escalating Israeli attacks.

“Their attacks on Gaza have gone far too extreme. In fact, during earlier discussions, there were voices asking why we are so firm on the Gaza issue.

“I told them that our religion and culture emphasise humanity. We must not only talk about culture, progress, race, or religion.”

He stressed that the cruelty of the Zionist regime was excessive and highlighted the failure of the international system to restrain a country from freely attacking another.

“But when human beings, little children are killed and homes destroyed, it affects us. So let us be an example of humanity, compassion, love, and kindness.

“That is all we can do. We cannot do more than that, as we are a developing country, but we will still do our very best.”
