(Bandar Seri Begawan, 26th) Rafidah, Acting Permanent Secretary of the Brunei Ministry of Health, led a delegation to attend an exchange dialogue in Glasgow, Scotland, UK, with students studying medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and other related health professions, as well as doctors undergoing specialist training.
This exchange aimed to provide a platform for interaction and communication between the Ministry of Health and Bruneian students studying abroad, especially those in strategic fields related to the development of the national medical and health system.
At the meeting, Rafidah emphasized several key issues closely related to the development direction and current needs of the national health department. Among them was the issue of insufficient local manpower in Brunei’s healthcare sector, which is currently unable to fully meet all the medical and health service needs across the country.
In this regard, she reminded students that His Majesty the Sultan’s government has allocated large sums for funding education and training in health-related fields. These investments are costly and are aimed at ensuring the country has qualified, competent, and competitive professionals.
She also stressed that having the opportunity to study and undergo training at world-class institutions abroad is a rare privilege that students should fully utilize. The knowledge, experience, and skills acquired during their studies can not only expose them to the latest technologies, clinical procedures, and medical techniques but will also contribute to improving the quality of the nation’s medical services in the future.
She further pointed out that the international professional knowledge and experience brought back by graduates will become an important catalyst for transforming and continuously improving the country’s healthcare system, bringing it in line with international standards and best medical practices.
At the same time, she urged students and doctors to always maintain a high level of professionalism and to practice integrity, self-discipline, and excellence in professional ethics during their studies and clinical training.
She emphasized that the medical industry not only requires excellent academic and technical abilities but also demands that professionals display empathy, compassion, and sensitivity when interacting with patients and the public, while continuously attending to their own physical, mental, and spiritual health.
She believes that students are a valuable asset to the nation and will play an important role in safeguarding the welfare of Brunei’s people and residents.
At the end of the exchange, Rafidah also expressed her hope that students would return to serve the country after completing their studies, contributing their expertise and strength to bolster the construction of the national medical and health system.
She emphasized that the dedication and professionalism of the next generation of healthcare professionals are crucial to realizing the nation’s vision of building a sustainable, progressive, and resilient healthcare system.
This dialogue was attended by a total of 110 students, 35 of whom participated online. This meeting and exchange demonstrated the Brunei Ministry of Health’s continued commitment to strengthening its ties and communication network with overseas Bruneian students, especially those in the fields of medicine and health. These initiatives represent Brunei’s strategic investment in cultivating a generation of highly qualified, capable, and competitive healthcare professionals, aiming to ensure a brighter future for Brunei’s healthcare system.
