Hong Kong Government Requests Japan to Ensure Personal Safety of Hong Kong Tourists

The Hong Kong SAR government has expressed concern to the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong regarding the recent incident of a Hong Kong resident being assaulted in Japan, and has requested the Japanese government to safeguard the personal safety of Hong Kong travelers in Japan in accordance with the law.

According to a government press release issued on the 19th, the Hong Kong Immigration Department immediately contacted the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in the HKSAR and the Chinese Consulate-General in Sapporo to learn about and follow up on the incident after learning of it, and has provided appropriate assistance based on the wishes of the individual involved.

The press release stated that the Hong Kong Immigration Department will continue to maintain close contact with the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in the HKSAR and Chinese diplomatic and consular missions in Japan, and will provide necessary and appropriate assistance to Hong Kong people in Japan.

Earlier, the Chinese Consulate-General in Sapporo reported that a Hong Kong tourist was struck on the head with a beer bottle in a restaurant in Sapporo in the early morning of the 18th, and that Japanese police arrested the suspect at the scene.

The Chinese Consulate-General said that it has made representations to the local police, demanding that the perpetrator be seriously held accountable and that the safety and lawful rights and interests of Chinese citizens be effectively protected.

The Consulate-General stated: "The Chinese Consulate-General in Sapporo once again reminds Chinese citizens to avoid traveling to Japan for the time being, and urges Chinese citizens in its jurisdiction to remain alert to local public security conditions, enhance awareness of safety precautions, and strengthen self-protection."
