(Kuching, 6th) The CEO of Sarawak Metro,  Mazli Mustaffa, pointed out that the Kuching City Transportation System Project aims to create more orderly transportation infrastructure and is part of an initiative to expand the use of urban rail transit in other areas of Sarawak.

He stated that the first phase of the project will involve the construction of three main lines connecting strategic areas around Kuching.

“These routes are the blue route connecting Rembus and the Knowledge Trade Centre, the red route connecting Kuching Central Station and Pending, and the green route connecting Pending and Damai. In the next phase, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari has announced the construction of the yellow line, which will connect to Siburan.”

Mazli Mustaffa, during a special interview with the Sarawak Public Relations Unit, pointed out that a feasibility study for the Bintulu-Samalaju Transportation System is also underway to connect Bintulu City with Samalaju Industrial Park to support industrial activities and labor mobility.

When discussing the urban rail transit project, he mentioned that considering Sarawak lacks experience in the railway industry and skilled human resources, several key challenges need to be overcome.

He said that various measures have been taken to address the issues, including bringing back Sarawak experts with overseas experience to contribute their expertise to their homeland.

“Additionally, socioeconomic development plans have been implemented to train the local workforce through practical training and projects such as the Sarawak Metro Youth Talent Program. This program also collaborates with higher education institutions and technical and vocational education training centers to develop training modules that meet the needs of the urban rail transit system. Meanwhile, the SEED program focuses on the development of a sustainable ecosystem, with local assembly of 33 urban rail transit carriages taking place in the Demak Laut plant.”

Mazli Mustaffa noted that changing public perception of urban rail transit in Sarawak is also a significant challenge, as many people are still accustomed to driving.

“Sarawak Metro is working closely with local and federal authorities to develop new standards and regulations to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the ART system.”

He said that the urban rail transit, which combines advanced technology, energy sustainability, and operational efficiency, is expected to become a more modern and eco-friendly alternative public transportation solution for Sarawak.
