(Haikou, 9th) The 4th Wushu Taolu World Cup entered its second day of competition today, which also marked the concluding day of this edition. Brunei’s national wushu team had two athletes competing, achieving another breakthrough amidst stiff competition. Notably, in the women's Taijijian event, they clinched a valuable silver medal.
Men's Nan Gun: Brunei athlete Adi Salihin (Li Han) was the first to compete. In today’s competition, he showed slight fatigue and some imperfections in his movements, ultimately earning a score of 9.74 and placing fourth. The gold medal went to a competitor from Hong Kong, China, with a score of 9.773, the silver was claimed by the Indonesian competitor with 9.750, and the bronze went to the Taipei athlete with 9.746. Facing the world’s top talents, any minor mistake can directly affect the score, and Li Han’s achievement of fourth place under such immense pressure is commendable.
Women's Taijijian: Brunei athlete Basmah faced significant mental pressure after ranking fourth in the Taijiquan event the previous day. Nevertheless, she overcame the pressure, delivered a fluid routine with well-coordinated movements and music, executed perfectly, and ultimately earned a high score of 9.746 to win the silver medal! The gold went to a Japanese athlete with 9.773, and the bronze to a Singaporean athlete with 9.743. This is Brunei Wushu Team’s best result at the World Cup and represents a historic breakthrough.
Thus, Brunei’s three qualified athletes (Wali, Li Han, Basmah) participated in five events (Changquan, Nanquan, Taijiquan, Nangun, Taijijian), all making it into the top five. Basmah took silver, while Wali and Li Han each secured a fourth place. Compared to last year’s World Championships in Brazil, every athlete improved their ranking, fully demonstrating the rapid progress of Brunei’s wushu standards.
Head Coach Li Hui and Women's Taijiquan Coach Zhao Chunjie were extremely pleased with the athletes’ performances over the two days. They said, "The kids withstood the pressure of high-level competition and performed up to their training standards—we are proud of them." After the competition, the team immediately held a review meeting to seriously analyze shortcomings and learn from others. Next, the team will formulate targeted training plans to fully prepare for the upcoming Asian Games in Japan.
The Brunei Wushu Team expresses heartfelt thanks to the Brunei Olympic Committee, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and the Brunei Wushu Federation for their unwavering support. It is because of this all-round support that the athletes are able to shine on the world’s top stage.
