A man in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, noticed stray cats in his community and brought canned food to feed them. A male neighbor mistakenly believed he was poisoning the cats and a verbal dispute escalated into a physical altercation. Lin, the neighbor, grabbed a brick and smashed it over Hong's head, causing severe injuries. Hong reported the incident to the police, and Lin was sentenced to two months for assault, with the option of a fine.

According to a report from the Liberty Times on the 27th, the court verdict stated that on the night of March 8 last year, around 11 PM, a man surnamed Hong was feeding stray cats with canned food in the community. Lin, a neighbor, passed by and mistakenly thought Hong disliked cats and was using a can containing poison to feed them. Lin rushed forward to stop him; despite Hong’s repeated explanations, Lin did not believe him, leading to a heated argument.

During the conflict, Lin picked up a brick from the roadside and struck Hong directly on the head, causing facial bone fractures and multiple lacerations to Hong’s face. After the attack, Lin regained his composure, saw that Hong was bleeding profusely from the head, and immediately called the police to turn himself in.

When the police arrived, both parties filed assault complaints against each other, but after investigation, prosecutors decided not to indict Hong. During the trial at the Kaohsiung District Court, Lin admitted to the crime. The judge recognized that Lin met the criteria for a reduced sentence due to voluntary confession and sentenced him to two months in prison for assault, with an option to pay a fine. The verdict can be appealed.
