Meng Hua: Deepening Sino-Bruneian Cultural Exchanges and Painting a New Vision for Culture and Tourism Cooperation

(Bandar Seri Begawan, 11th) Meng Hua, Head of the Publicity Department of the Sichuan Provincial Committee of China, said that he was very honored to be able to gather with everyone in the beautiful and peaceful ‘Pearl of Borneo’—Brunei, in the serene city of Bandar Seri Begawan. He was delighted to host the “Charming Sichuan · Sensing the World” Sichuan-Brunei tourism promotion event in this “Nation of Peace.”
He said, Brunei and China are friendly neighbors facing each other across the sea, and the friendship between the two countries goes back a long way. This year also marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brunei. As early as 2018, Sichuan signed a memorandum of cooperation with nine ASEAN friendship organizations, including the Brunei–China Friendship Association, and both sides have carried out close cooperation in culture, education, youth exchange, and other fields.
Especially in 2022, the “Overseas Compatriot Panda Book House” project, which was supported by Dazhou City, Sichuan Province, for the Brunei Kuala Belait Chung Hwa Middle School, was officially launched. This not only stands as a testament to the deep bond between Sichuan and Brunei but also allowed us to feel a strong sense of “book fragrance” and “hometown affection” in a foreign land.

He stated that today he came with the enthusiasm of the Land of Abundance, aiming to use tourism as a medium to further bring the people of the two places closer together and deepen pragmatic cooperation in the field of culture. First, he introduced Sichuan, a place people ‘want to visit again and again.’ Located in the southwest of China, Sichuan is the homeland of China’s national treasure, the giant panda. Sichuan is not only one of China's most economically vibrant provinces but also a world-renowned tourist destination. Here, there is the profound culture of “Mount Qingcheng is the most secluded under Heaven, Mount Emei the most magnificent,” the fairyland paradise of “He who has visited Jiuzhaigou sees no more water elsewhere worth seeing,” and the world’s largest ancient water conservancy project—Dujiangyan.
Speaking at the Sichuan-Brunei tourism promotion event yesterday afternoon, Meng Hua pointed out that Sichuan’s tourism market is vibrant and dynamic, with both total tourist visits and total tourism spending in the province expected to remain in the top tier nationwide by 2025. Here, history and the future meet, everyday bustle coexists with international flair.

During the event, there will be presentations on Sichuan-Brunei tourism destinations, showcasing Sichuan’s rich cultural and tourism resources, convenient international access, and the unique aesthetic of Bashu lifestyle. He sincerely invited friends from Brunei to come to Sichuan and experience the distinctive “leisurely” life.
He stated that culture becomes more colorful through exchange, and civilization is enriched through mutual learning. His visit to Brunei was not only to showcase Sichuan’s natural and cultural splendor, but also to build a normalized bridge of cooperation. Today’s event will also feature special presentations on two key cultural projects—the Golden Panda Awards, a film and television platform to foster people-to-people connection, and the Tianfu Book Fair, which promotes national reading and friendship through books.

These two projects—one capturing the spirit of the era through imagery, the other nurturing life with the fragrance of books—are both public goods that Sichuan offers for cultural exchange with the world. Taking this opportunity, he also sincerely invited friends from Brunei to actively participate and jointly share the opportunities and excitement. Friends, true understanding knows no distance; thousands of miles still make neighbors. Brunei has the lively Gadong Night Market, and Sichuan has the leisurely pace of Yulin Road; Brunei has the resilience and wisdom of its water villages, and Sichuan has the ancient craftsmanship of the millennia-old Dujiangyan.
Although the two places speak different languages, the yearning for a better life is the same. It is sincerely hoped that through today’s event, more friends from Brunei will get to know Sichuan and fall in love with Sichuan. We warmly welcome our friends from Brunei to tour, sightsee, and invest in Sichuan, and look forward to more substantive cooperation between the two places in the fields of film and television, publishing, and media.
