(Bandar Seri Begawan, 17th Dec) A Nepalese man who caused serious injuries to his colleague in an employee dormitory was sentenced to 24 months in prison and three strokes of the cane.
The prosecutor stated that on May 13, Bhawan (30 years old), who worked as a cleaner at a company, went to his colleague's room at noon to ask for a cigarette. When the colleague refused, the defendant became furious, grabbed a frying pan from the kitchen, and repeatedly hit the colleague on the head.
The victim suffered a depressed skull fracture and intracranial bleeding, requiring surgical treatment and a 14-day stay in the intensive care unit.
The defendant admitted to assaulting the victim during the police investigation and claimed that the refusal was the reason for his actions. He was arrested later that day, and the frying pan used in the attack was confiscated by the authorities.
The judge in the ruling noted that the defendant had no previous criminal record, and the sentence was imposed to deter similar violent behavior.
