(Bandar Seri Begawan, 19th) With model teeth, small toothbrushes, and catchy toothbrushing songs, the children at Brunei Chung Hwa School Kindergarten are learning the secrets to caring for their teeth with laughter and joy.
In the recent annual toothbrushing campaign at the school’s kindergarten, all the children eagerly participated in an enjoyable oral health activity. Eight nurses from Brunei Central Hospital gave a live demonstration to the K3 children, showing the correct tooth brushing techniques and explaining which foods are beneficial or harmful to teeth.
At the event, the nurses brought dental models and toothbrushes and used lively, engaging methods to teach the children proper toothbrushing techniques. The children, eyes wide with curiosity, observed every tooth on the model and learned how to clean their own teeth correctly under the nurses’ guidance.
The nurses placed special emphasis on brushing details: clenching the teeth together, gently placing the bristles on the tooth surface, brushing vertically and horizontally, and opening the mouth to brush the chewing surfaces. This hands-on teaching allowed the children to master the right brushing skills while having fun.
To help the children better understand the importance of toothbrushing, the Chung Hwa kindergarten teachers used vivid cartoon images and dental models to introduce the structure and function of teeth. At the same time, they used PPTs and animated videos to explain the causes and dangers of tooth decay, planting in the children’s hearts the willingness to protect their teeth.
Besides brushing techniques, this event also paid special attention to the impact of diet on dental health. Nurses from the Central Hospital explained which foods benefit teeth and which ones should be eaten less.
While carrying out the toothbrushing campaign, Chung Hwa Kindergarten also emphasized home-school cooperation. Teachers used communication platforms such as WhatsApp to promote dental care knowledge to parents and suggested that they supervise their children’s daily brushing at home.
“Early childhood is a key period for developing oral hygiene habits. Habits formed in kindergarten often last a lifetime. At the same time, home-school cooperation is crucial in fostering good hygiene habits in children. We encourage parents to remind their children to brush their teeth on time at home to jointly maintain their oral health,” said Assistant Principal Sim Mun Ling of Chung Hwa Kindergarten.
Principal Hii Mooi Lan of Chung Hwa School stated that the toothbrushing campaign will continue as a yearly activity at the kindergarten. In the future, the kindergarten will continue to collaborate with professional institutions like Central Hospital to provide regular dental check-ups for the children, ensuring their oral health.
Principal Hii emphasized that healthy teeth are not only important for children’s chewing function but also directly affect their growth, development, and self-confidence. Through engaging and educational activities, the kindergarten is laying a solid foundation for the children’s future health.
Indeed, through this toothbrushing campaign, the kindergarten has enabled the children not only to learn the right brushing methods but also to instill an awareness of “caring for and protecting teeth starts from childhood.”
