The US State Department stated that the ceasefire agreement reached on the 16th between Israel and Lebanon includes a pledge from the Lebanese government to prevent the militant group 'Hezbollah' from launching any attacks against Israel.
US President Trump said on his social media platform “Truth Social”: “The two leaders have reached a common position. In order to achieve peace between the two countries, they will officially begin a 10-day ceasefire at 5 p.m. US Eastern time (5 a.m. Malaysian time on the 17th).”
Trump did not mention Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
The State Department pointed out in a statement that as part of the ceasefire agreement, ‘the Lebanese government will take meaningful measures to prevent Hezbollah… from carrying out any attacks, actions, or hostilities against Israeli targets.’
Lebanon was drawn into the US-Israeli war against Iran after Iran-backed Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel.
According to reports, based on the text of the ceasefire agreement published by the US State Department, after the ceasefire takes effect, the Lebanese government will take action to prevent Hezbollah and other non-governmental armed groups within its territory from launching any attacks on Israel.
Israel, during the ceasefire period, may take necessary self-defense measures in response to planned, imminent, or ongoing attacks. However, Israel agrees not to launch any offensive military operations within Lebanese territory during these 10 days.
