(Bandar Seri Begawan, 27th) Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd recently successfully hosted an on-campus education promotion event at Chung Ching Middle School, Seria. Jointly organized by Hengyi’s Human Resources Department and Corporate Communications Department, the event aimed to introduce students to the company’s culture, career development opportunities, and environmental and safety concepts, further inspiring youths’ awareness and interest in the petrochemical industry.
This event’s organizing team included members from Hengyi’s Human Resources Department, Corporate Communications Department, and Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Management Department. The program was divided into three main sections, each delivered by a Hengyi representative who explained the company’s work culture, talent development mechanisms, and safety/environmental practices in simple terms.
The event kicked off with Ms. Ma Shina introducing Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd’s development overview, including the background of its cooperation with the Brunei government, factory establishment location, and development history. She noted that Hengyi set up its factory on Pulau Muara Besar (PMB), which took 2.5 years to construct before officially commencing operations in November 2019. In her speech, she emphasized the company’s three core philosophies: "Focusing on the future and nurturing local talent," "Protecting our shared planet and environment together," and "Strengthening community ties and giving back to society." She stressed that Hengyi is committed to producing high value-added petrochemical products through continuous innovation and a sustainable business model, while strictly adhering to the highest environmental and safety standards.
Next, Ms. Chen Xinying introduced Hengyi’s local talent cultivation efforts. She shared information about the company’s undergraduate scholarship program established in partnership with Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Zhejiang University, in which students study at UBD for two years, then continue one and a half years at Zhejiang University, followed by a six-month internship at Hengyi. Successful graduates are offered employment opportunities. As of February this year, the program has reached its 12th cohort, with 15 UBD students having continued their studies at Zhejiang University. Hengyi has also collaborated with IBTE (Institute of Brunei Technical Education) and Lanzhou Petrochemical Vocational College, awarding a total of 142 scholarships, with some students now working as plant operators at Hengyi. Additionally, joint training programs have been undertaken with Politeknik Brunei to nurture petrochemical operation and laboratory technology professionals.
The third speaker, Mr. Guo Zhenguang, from Hengyi’s HSSE Management Department, explained the department’s key roles in the company, including ensuring operational compliance, safeguarding employee health, accident prevention, environmental protection, and sustainable development. He also shared practical approaches to improving staff mental wellbeing, maintaining workplace hygiene, implementing safe production procedures, risk assessment and hazard elimination, responding to emergencies, and maintaining plant security.
The second segment featured a video presentation, providing students with a more vivid understanding of Hengyi’s safety training, fire drills, and security measures, demonstrating the company’s high standards in safeguarding staff and site safety. The video also covered Hengyi’s social responsibility initiatives in Brunei, such as environmental actions, tree planting, and community engagement projects. Interviews with scholarship recipients demonstrated the company’s sustained investment in education and talent cultivation.
The final part of the educational event was an interactive Q&A, where students participated enthusiastically in a fun quiz. The lively atmosphere, along with the opportunity to win attractive prizes, further enhanced their understanding of and favor towards Hengyi.
Through this on-campus education promotion event, students not only gained an in-depth understanding of Hengyi’s vital contributions to Brunei's petrochemical midstream industry and cultivation of local talent, but also realized the company’s positive impact on Brunei Vision 2035—especially in economic diversification, education quality improvements, and sustainable development.
