(Bandar Seri Begawan, 27th) Hsiao Sheng-Chung, Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Brunei, visited the historic Tutong Chung Hwa School yesterday, where he received a warm welcome from all the teachers and students. The campus visit was personally hosted and guided by Chairman Sun Sheng-Li, with both parties exchanging views on topics such as education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges, hoping to further deepen the friendship between Taiwan and Brunei.
Chairman Sun Sheng-Li delivered a speech expressing gratitude for Taiwan's longstanding support for Chinese language education and the school's software and hardware facilities. He also briefly reviewed the history of Chinese school development in Brunei.
Chairman Sun pointed out that Tutong Chung Hwa School was established in 1937 and, over its 88-year history, is the third oldest Chinese school in Brunei. It currently offers kindergarten to primary six courses. As a private Chinese school, it does not receive government subsidies, yet still serves the community with low tuition fees, ensuring parents are not burdened with financial pressure. Its funding mainly relies on the generous donations of the Chinese community.
Representative Hsiao noted three particularly touching aspects of this campus visit. First, the over 88-year history of Tutong Chung Hwa School bears witness to the deep roots of Chinese education in Brunei; secondly, over seventy percent of the students are of Malay ethnicity, fully demonstrating ethnic integration and cultural harmony; furthermore, the school's software and hardware facilities keep advancing, showcasing the efforts and achievements of the board and teaching staff—these are all truly moving.
Representative Hsiao stated that the Taipei office will continue to monitor and support the school’s development, offering assistance with teaching equipment if needed. In addition, the office will donate stamp albums and books from Taiwan for the school library, with the intention of not only introducing Taiwan, but also jointly promoting Chinese culture and Chinese language education with the school. At the end of the event, both parties exchanged souvenirs and took group photos, marking a perfect conclusion to this meaningful educational and cultural exchange visit.
