(Sibu, 18th) Community leaders in the Sibu area extended a helping hand to the fire victims of Rumah Panjang Jonathan Budon on Jalan Penasu on Tuesday, providing aid to alleviate the impact of the fire.
Led by Temenggong Stanly Geramong Bandar, the team included Pemanca Paing Tawi and several village heads and community leaders, who delivered daily necessities like rice, drinking water, biscuits, and other essentials to the victims currently housed at the temporary shelter (PPS) at SK Tanjung Penasu.
Village head Penghulu Eddy Jemat stated that this assistance symbolizes the spirit of community unity, particularly the grassroots leaders' concern and support for the people in distress.
"We hope these donations bring some comfort and encouragement to the victims, helping them to recover after the disaster," Eddy said to the media yesterday. He added that relevant personnel will continue to monitor the situation and work with relevant agencies to ensure all victims receive adequate assistance.
Residents of Rumah Panjang Jonathan Budon expressed deep gratitude for the community's care and hoped more people would lend a helping hand in the reconstruction after the disaster.
The fire occurred at approximately 6:50 PM on Monday, completely destroying a non-permanent longhouse structure with nine doors, displacing 34 residents from nine families who are now homeless.
Following the incident, Sungai Merah Fire Station (BBP Sungai Merah) and Sibu Central Fire Station (BBP Sibu Sentral) jointly extinguished the fire, fully controlling the flames by 7:44 PM that night.
The fire affected a non-permanent structure approximately 180 x 150 square feet, with the longhouse being completely engulfed in flames.
All affected residents were relocated to the temporary shelter at SK Tanjung Penasu at 10 PM that night.
