Two years ago, American superstars Taylor Swift, Beyoncé Knowles, and their predecessor Madonna all held concert tours around the same time. Although in terms of current popularity Madonna can’t quite match Taylor Swift, it turns out that as an earlier entrant into the industry, Madonna remains the most successful female artist in the world’s history. The Guinness World Records has recently re-certified Madonna as the highest-selling female artist of all time.
Statistics show that Madonna leads all female artists in album sales, singles, and digital streaming! Trailing her are Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé. Reportedly, Madonna has held the “best-selling female artist” title since 2009, and she also holds the record for “highest-grossing female touring artist,” with concert ticket sales nearing USD 1.4 billion (approximately MYR 5.9 billion). As her “The Celebration” tour is ongoing, that number is expected to rise even higher.
Although Madonna’s album sales are the best among female artists, the highest-selling album by a female artist actually belongs to the late American diva Whitney Houston. Her 1992 album, the soundtrack for the movie The Bodyguard, has sold a staggering 45 million copies.
