2.9 Tons of Cocaine Seized in UK, Black Market Value Nearly £1.3 Billion

The UK government announced on the 10th that law enforcement agencies recently carried out a major anti-drug operation, seizing 2.9 tons of cocaine in a shipment of banana freight containers entering the country from South America. This is one of the largest drug smuggling cases discovered at UK ports in recent times.

The confiscated drugs have a black market value as high as £232 million (approximately 1.283 billion Malaysian ringgit).

South America has long been a major global producer of cocaine. Criminal gangs commonly use fresh fruit containers as cover, taking advantage of bulk cross-border shipments and densely stacked cargo, which makes inspection difficult, to covertly smuggle large quantities of drugs. This has become a key challenge for European countries in combating drug trafficking.

The smuggling group concealed tightly-sealed, black-packaged cocaine in the interlayers of banana boxes, entering the country through legal fresh produce trade containers that were normally cleared through customs.

Police arrested nine men involved in the case, all suspected of participating in large-scale drug reception, transportation, and distribution chains.
