Colombia Earthquake: 132 Dead, 570 Injured as Authorities Declare State of Emergency

The Colombian government gave the latest update on the 10th, stating that the earthquake that struck the western part of the country that day has caused 132 deaths and 570 injuries, with 32 cities nationwide suffering severe damage.

The government has already declared a national state of emergency. The strong quake led to the collapse of 61 buildings and damage to 1,575 houses. Seven airports have suspended operations.

As rescue workers scale up search-and-rescue efforts, the death toll is expected to rise further.

The report states that the capitals of five provinces in Colombia are currently under red alert: Pereira, Cali, Quibdó, Manizales, and Armenia. Among them, Pereira has reported 60 deaths, Cali 15 deaths, Quibdó 8 deaths, and Manizales 4 deaths.

The United States Geological Survey and the Colombian Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at 7:34 am on the 10th (8:34 pm Malaysian time), with the epicenter near San José del Palmar in Chocó Department.

Authorities mentioned that this is the strongest earthquake in Colombia in the past ten years.
