Zheng Liwen: Xi Jinping Pledged That As Long As Both Sides of the Strait Acknowledge One China, Anything Can Be Negotiated

Kuomintang (KMT) Chairwoman Zheng Liwen stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged during their meeting that as long as both sides of the Taiwan Strait acknowledge One China, anything can be negotiated.

Zheng Liwen, who is currently visiting the United States, attended a forum at the Asia Society on Monday.

Zheng Liwen said that if people understood the Taiwanese independence movement, they would find that its narrative from beginning to end is "anti-China," portraying mainland China as the only obstacle to Taiwan’s modernization and progress. “This is simply not the case.”

She said that Taiwan’s existence does not challenge the legitimacy of the Communist Party. Under the "Constitution of the Republic of China," Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu have developed into a mature society with rule of law, democracy, freedom, and prosperity. These achievements do not belittle the mainland, nor do they challenge the legitimate status of mainland China. In fact, such achievements are not just the achievements of Taiwan, but also the achievements of the entire Chinese nation.

Zheng Liwen said that, during her meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Xi expressed his understanding that the people of Taiwan have chosen a completely different social system and way of life, but this does not mean Taiwan seeks independence or division. Xi promised that as long as both sides share the same Chinese civilization and are part of the Chinese nation, anything can be discussed.

She stated that she believes that on the basis of the 1992 Consensus and identification as members of the Chinese nation on both sides of the Strait, there is ample space to establish a sustainable, institutionalized, and peaceful cross-strait relationship.

At the Xi-Zheng meeting held on April 10, Xi Jinping said he is willing, on the shared political foundation of upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing Taiwan independence, to strengthen exchanges and dialogue with all political parties, groups, and people from all sectors of Taiwan, including the Kuomintang, to seek peace for both sides, well-being for the compatriots, and rejuvenation of the nation, so that the future of cross-strait relations rests firmly in the hands of the Chinese people themselves. Zheng Liwen said she looks forward to the KMT and CCP jointly promoting the institutionalization of cross-strait peace, and, on the shared foundation of upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing Taiwan independence, further planning and constructing dialogue and cooperation mechanisms with institutionalization and sustainability, making peaceful development across the Strait irreversible.
