KUCHING: Sarawak is now in a state of readiness for the Northeast Monsoon, expected to occur from Nov until Mar 2026, says Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
She said key preparations include setting up Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) and activating forward bases to store dry food supplies, especially for areas located far from urban centres.
“All PPS are prepared in terms of location, capacity and essential equipment such as mattresses, food, clean water and healthcare facilities.
“This also includes facilities for frontline personnel who will be providing services to flood victims at the PPS,” she said when contacted today (Nov 19).
Fatimah said PPS across the state vary in size and capacity according to local needs, with all centres now ready to receive evacuees should the need for evacuation arise.
Meanwhile, MetMalaysia deputy director-general (Operations) Ambun Dindang previously said the Northeast Monsoon, expected to continue until Mar next year, will initially affect Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang, which are forecast to experience continuous heavy rain from Nov to Dec.
Entering Dec and Jan, he said the continuous rain is expected to be concentrated in southern Terengganu, Pahang and Johor. Sabah and Sarawak may also be affected depending on the movement of the monsoon.
