KUCHING: The Sarawak Government has launched two high-impact water supply projects in Lundu-Sematan, aimed at improving treated water coverage and meeting growing demand in the district.

The projects were officially officiated today by Utility and Telecommunication Minister, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi.

Fully funded by the state government at a combined cost of around RM256 million, they are being implemented by the Sarawak Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications in collaboration with the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB).

The first, the new Lundu Water Treatment Plant, involves constructing a 20 million litre per day facility, intake stations, administrative buildings, chemical storage, and pump houses.

It also includes 1.5 kilometres (km) of raw water pipelines, 4.5 km of treated water pipelines to Simpang Biawak, and 6 km of pipelines from Simpang Biawak to the Bagak Booster Pump Station.

The plant is expected to be operational by 2028, supplying treated water to both existing and new users in the district.

The second project, the Lundu-Sematan Regional Water Supply Project, will see four booster pump stations built at Telok Melano No. 1, Telok Melano No. 2, Sematan, and Opek, alongside four water storage tanks ranging from 2 million to 4.5 million litres.

It also covers 102 km of pipelines and communication lines to 1,176 households.

Construction began in September 2025, with completion targeted for the third quarter of 2028.
