【Southern Thailand Unrest】 Roadside Bomb Ambush – Six Injured in District Chief’s Convoy

A bomb attack occurred in Mayo District, Pattani Province, southern Thailand, on Thursday afternoon. The assailants had knowledge of the district chief’s convoy schedule and detonated a roadside bomb during their route, resulting in injuries to six people, including law enforcement officers and accompanying personnel. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.

According to local media reports, the incident happened around 4:40 pm near an irrigation road in the Rupo Ilai area of Mayo District, Pattani Province. After hearing a loud explosion, the local village chief immediately informed the relevant authorities to investigate.

Preliminary investigations showed that Mayo District Chief Danu Nason was ambushed while returning to the district office after officiating at the opening ceremony of a local sporting event.

At the time of the incident, the district chief’s convoy consisted of three vehicles. The perpetrators are suspected to have pre-placed an explosive device on a still-under-construction irrigation road and detonated it as the convoy passed.

The explosion caused six people in the convoy to be injured, most of whom experienced symptoms such as ringing in the ears and chest discomfort. The injured have since received further examinations and medical treatment.

After the incident, Thai security forces quickly sealed off the area and deployed drones to the explosion site for aerial reconnaissance to assess the safety of the scene and search for suspicious clues.

Subsequently, the military, police, and relevant law enforcement agencies entered the scene to carry out investigations and gather evidence to track down the suspects’ identities and motives.

In recent years, attacks targeting government officials and security forces continue to occur sporadically in southern Thailand, especially in Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces, indicating that local security remains a serious concern.
