Korean heartthrob So Ji-Sub is well-known for valuing the work of his production team. Recently, he made headlines again for his lavish gift-giving: after the wrap of the drama , he prepared 1g of gold for each of the approximately 300 actors and staff, with the total amount nearing 100 million KRW (about 278,000 MYR). Many crew members have also taken to social media to share photos of the gold and thank you cards they received, exclaiming, “As expected, our ‘Director’ is so generous!”
After the broadcast of , So Ji-Sub also expressed his thoughts on wrapping up the series, sincerely thanking all the actors and staff. He said that the completion of this project was entirely thanks to everyone quietly persevering through the cold weather on set, and he expressed heartfelt gratitude to the crew who fought alongside him. In the card he sent with the gold to staff, he wrote: “Completing this project together with everyone gave me great emotion and happiness. Thank you all for always silently sticking to your posts, making shine even brighter.”
This isn’t the first time So Ji-Sub has given out gold. Previously, while filming the movie , he also paid out of his own pocket to give gold to fellow actors and colleagues, sparking heated discussion. In past interviews, So Ji-Sub explained that the reason he chooses gold as a gift is, on one hand, to avoid the impression that the gift is from a brand sponsor, and on the other, for its practicality. He once said that if times were to get tough in the future, recipients could sell the gold in an emergency. “I hope that if anyone needs it in the future, they can cash it out and use it.”
