JOHOR BAHRU, April 16 (Bernama) -- The Works Ministry (KKR) is implementing a project to build 91 classrooms in 70 schools nationwide with high student enrolment this year.

Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan said the construction would use modular methods and the Industrialised Building System (IBS), with RM80 million allocated by the Education Ministry (MOE).

He said a total of 70 contractors had been appointed to carry out the project, which also covers schools in Sabah and Sarawak.

“The project is called ‘quick win’ so that construction can be completed faster and benefits can be felt immediately by students,” he told a press conference after visiting the Johor Bahru Public Works Department (JKR) office here today.

Meanwhile, on claims by the Malaysian Malay Contractors Association (PKMM) that 4,100 contractors were at risk of going out of business due to rising diesel prices, Ahmad said the government was working to assist all parties following the global energy crisis, including those in the construction sector.

Ahmad said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi had previously announced several measures, including expanding opportunities for local contractors, particularly small and medium-sized contractors.

He said this involved maintenance, repair and suitably scaled projects to ensure they continued to have work and were not left behind amid rising operating costs.

He added that nine building construction projects worth RM91.38 million were currently being implemented in Johor Bahru under federal government allocation, while two projects worth RM73 million were under state government funding.

The projects include the construction of schools, classroom extensions, special education facilities and halls, as well as offices for government agencies, kindergartens and other public facilities.

He said RM35 million had been allocated for 10 projects involving upgrading and maintenance works for school buildings and government agency offices.

Ahmad said that from the beginning of the year until this month, the Johor Bahru JKR had received RM12 million in allocations compared with RM6 million in 2025, specifically for federal road maintenance.

He said the allocation covered road surface repairs, drainage systems, as well as improvements to road furniture and signage to enhance user safety.

“Two state road projects were also being implemented with a total value of RM80.46 million,” he said.

He said inspections found that maintenance works and development projects were proceeding according to plan, with continuous monitoring to ensure all projects were completed on schedule, within budget and to the required quality standards.
