(Bandar Seri Begawan, 17th) The Industrial and Business Ecosystem Division (IBE) of the Ministry of Finance and Economy, through the Department of Weights and Measures (SDT), recently conducted law enforcement actions at Hua Dan celebration stalls.
Multiple operations were conducted on: July 17 at the Royal Regalia Building and the parking lot opposite the food stalls; August 28 at the Royal Wharf, Night Market Square, Yayasan Shopping Centre, and the parking lot opposite the Royal Instruments Building.
This surprise inspection is part of routine checks, aiming to ensure that all weighing and measuring instruments used for commercial purposes are legal, accurate, and registered in accordance with Chapter 151 of the Weights and Measures Act, 1983. During the above operations, authorities conducted surprise checks on benches and tables at food and retail stalls, inspecting 25 weighing and measuring instruments used for commercial purposes, of which 19 did not comply with the provisions of Chapter 151 of the Weights and Measures Act, 1983—that is, the use of unregistered weighing and measuring devices.
Authorities have issued reminder notices to owners of such non-compliant weighing and measuring instruments, requiring them to rectify the issues at the SDT office within 7 days from the date of notification.
The authorities stated that traders and users of weighing and measuring instruments must comply with the provisions of Regulation 3(2) of the Weights and Measures (Inspection) Regulations, 1994; anyone who uses or possesses any scale, balance, or weighing instrument for trade that is not duly stamped under these regulations is in violation. Offenders are liable to a fine of 1,000 Brunei dollars or three months' imprisonment, or both. The scale, balance, or weighing instrument will be confiscated, and any contract, deal, sale, or commercial transaction conducted with said scale, balance, or weighing instrument shall be rendered invalid.
If the public has any questions, they may contact the Department of Weights and Measures (SDT) via email at sdt@mofe.gov.bn or by telephone at 2383142.
