(Bandar Seri Begawan, 17th) Brunei's Minister of Health, Dato Dr Isham, issued a statement today on World Patient Safety Day, noting that this year's theme is “Safe maternal and newborn care for every newborn and every child.”
Every year on September 17, World Patient Safety Day is celebrated across the globe. This year’s theme for World Patient Safety Day is “Safe maternal and newborn care for every newborn and every child,” with the slogan, “Patient safety: Every step counts.”
The theme and slogan highlight the importance of strengthening measures to protect newborns and children from any harm during treatment or care, and strive to eliminate or prevent all forms of harm that may occur in the process of newborn and child care.
According to international research estimates, 60% of adverse events that happen to newborns and children are preventable. Among these, common events include medical errors, infections, diagnostic errors, and medical device failures.
The goal of this year’s World Patient Safety Day is to raise global awareness of the safety risks in newborn and child care at all levels of healthcare institutions, with special attention to the needs of children, families, and caregivers; to mobilize governments, healthcare organizations, professional institutions, and communities to implement sustainable strategies, providing safer care for newborns and children as part of patient safety and quality initiatives; to empower parents and caregivers regarding newborn and child safety rights through education, awareness, and active participation in healthcare; and to support efforts to strengthen research on patient safety in newborn and child care.
Dato Dr Isham stated that Brunei prioritizes the wellbeing of its people and is committed to ensuring the universality (i.e. “universal accessibility”), high quality, and safety of its newborn and child healthcare system. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health will continuously review and improve the national healthcare system in line with current developments, strictly adhere to high health standards, and update policy, the implementation of guidelines, and procedures.
The Ministry has also promoted a continuous safety culture, ensuring that every voice is heard and every mistake is a lesson to prevent harm to patients. This does not only prevent harm more effectively, but also provides more efficient and safer services. To this end, the Ministry will continue to implement national strategies to ensure the delivery of high-quality and safe healthcare for all levels of society, such as: strengthening clinical practice in accordance with international standards to prevent injuries; empowering parents and guardians with sufficient knowledge, as they play a crucial role in caring for their children’s health; enhancing communication and collaboration among health professionals, realizing that such an approach is vital in preventing any errors; and leveraging technology and data, including the national health application, to improve risk monitoring and early detection, thereby ensuring newborns and infants receive the right care at the right time.
"The safety of newborns and infants is an investment in the nation's future. Through cooperation among government departments, the private sector, families, and all walks of society, a culture of safety can be established to protect newborns and infants and help them thrive. Therefore, let us all work together to put this year’s World Patient Safety Day’s theme and goals into practice to ensure that our descendants enjoy health, safety, and happiness."
