(Miri, 4th) Sarawak Minister of Transport and Senadin State Assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin pointed out that Sarawak has long been regarded as a model for ethnic and religious harmony in Malaysia. People of all races, adhering to the spirit of mutual respect, unity, and mutual assistance, face challenges together and jointly promote community development.
Speaking at the appointment certificate presentation ceremony for Miri Division community and village leaders this afternoon, he stated that Sarawak has a high level of social integration. No matter whether one is Chinese, Malay, Iban, Bidayuh, etc., everyone is able to tolerate and appreciate each other's cultural characteristics, demonstrating Sarawak’s exemplary status in a pluralistic society.
Lee Kim Shin emphasized that community and village leaders play a crucial role in grassroots governance, serving not only as bridges between the government and the people, but also as important pillars for maintaining social order, promoting cultural inheritance, and assisting in resolving public disputes.
"To effectively perform their leadership roles, community leaders must deeply understand and respect the traditions and customs of different ethnic groups. Only in this way can misunderstandings be avoided, conflicts resolved, and further enhance emotional connections and social cohesion among ethnic groups."
He pointed out that with social development, intermarriage among Sarawak’s ethnic groups has become increasingly common. Weddings often integrate multiple cultural elements such as lion dance performances, traditional costumes, and ethnic rituals, showcasing the fusion and prosperity of Sarawak’s multiculturalism.
Lee Kim Shin urged all appointed community and village leaders to continue to uphold their original intention to serve the people, actively cooperate with the government and community units to solve livelihood issues, promote grassroots development, listen proactively to the voices of the people, convey public opinion, and become reliable supporters and representatives of the people.
The appointed community and village leaders who received certificates on the day were Zulaman of Miri Division Bekenu, Penghulu Andara from Kampung Bakam, Pelajau and Luba, as well as Tuai Rumah Ninkau of Rumah Bunding, Sungai Tiris. The three will serve from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026.
