(Miri, 4 June) — The Miri City Council held its seventh "City Council Reception Day" event this morning at Jalan Tu Ba 5, receiving a total of 13 complaints and feedback from residents, covering four main areas: engineering affairs, public health, cleanliness & maintenance, and horticulture.
After the event, Mayor Yii Siaw Sian held a press conference, stating that the City Council will comprehensively follow up on all complaints, arranging relevant departments to conduct on-site inspections and take action in turn, with the aim of improving residents' living environment and urban quality.
The Engineering Department received the highest number of complaints this time, with 7 cases, including blocked drains in several areas such as Jalan Nilam, Jalan Tu Ba 2, and Tudan Phase 2 residential area.
In addition, the commercial area at Jalan Tu Ba 5 was reported to have damaged drain covers as well as deterioration at road edges and pavements.
Residents also pointed out that the entire stretch of Jalan Bulan Sabit, from the sports complex traffic lights onwards, is uneven, recommending that the authorities carry out a complete resurfacing.
In Senadin commercial area, residents complained about serious drain blockages caused by accumulated plastic waste, and potholes in some roads requiring urgent repair.
The Public Health Department received two complaints: one regarding a serious rat infestation in the drains behind the shophouses/market at Jalan Tu Ba 5, and the other about unhygienic conditions at the vending kiosk beside the Tourist Information Centre.
For cleanliness and maintenance, residents reported frequent stray dog sightings in the coastal city area, hoping for authorities to carry out capture and control measures to ensure public safety.
The Horticulture Department received three complaints, mainly focused on blocked roadside views.
Among them, overgrown tree branches along the Jalan Sena stretch are affecting drivers’ visibility; meanwhile in Piasau Jaya 2 residential area, some trees are obstructing residents’ entry and exit and urgently need trimming.
Yii Siaw Sian pointed out that "City Council Reception Day" is an important communication platform between the Council and the public. It not only bridges the gap but also enables the authorities to understand grassroots community needs more promptly.
She emphasized that the City Council will promptly undertake follow-up actions for all complaints, including arranging on-site surveys, cleaning, repairs, and more, to ensure a clean, safe, and livable environment for all residents.
