Nigerian officials said on the 30th that heavy rainfall in the central-northern Niger State on the 28th has resulted in at least 115 deaths due to flooding.
The National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria issued a statement that day stating that with the continuation of search and rescue operations, at least 115 bodies have been found. Rescue operations and disaster area support work have been initiated with the coordination of national and regional departments.
Previously, the head of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency told the media that the heavy rainfall on the evening of the 28th triggered floods in the Mokwa area of the state, causing multiple deaths and disappearances.
Local media reported that over 5,000 people are homeless; the Red Cross stated that the town's two main bridges have been washed away.
Nigeria enters the rainy season every April and it gradually ends in October. Continuous rainfall during the rainy season easily triggers flooding, severely impacting the production and lives of the people.
