(Kuala Lumpur, 27th) The United Nations has praised Malaysia for the role and leadership it has displayed during its tenure as ASEAN’s rotating chair this year.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan pointed out that UN Secretary-General António Guterres personally expressed his gratitude to him during bilateral meetings with various national leaders at the UN General Assembly.
He said Guterres stated that the United Nations fully supports Malaysia in fulfilling its duties as ASEAN chair.
"Guterres highly appreciates and affirms Malaysia’s role as chair of ASEAN, and during the meeting, he also mentioned that he will attend the 47th ASEAN Summit to be held in Kuala Lumpur this October.
"Today, I have handed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar’s invitation letter for the summit to the UN Secretary-General."
He said this at a press conference held at Malaysia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations on Friday (September 26).
Mohamad Hasan mentioned that Guterres was also very pleased during the meeting with Malaysia’s position and role on the Palestinian issue, including the Prime Minister's active advocacy for the Palestinian cause on the international stage.
"Guterres said that Malaysia’s actions align with his vision as UN Secretary-General, and he will provide any form of support needed for Malaysia and ASEAN so that coordination on the Palestinian issue—beyond just humanitarian boundaries—can be carried out until Palestine gains independence as a nation."
In addition, Mohamad Hasan also attended the OIC Foreign Ministers’ Coordination Meeting held at UN headquarters. He said that Malaysia’s firm stance on the Palestinian issue also received recognition from the OIC.
"Many countries praised the Prime Minister’s strong speech at the Doha Arab–Islamic Emergency Summit.
"Now is the time for us to take action to ensure that the items we have raised can be implemented in a coordinated manner. At the same time, we urge that the OIC’s voices and resolutions be elevated to a higher level at the United Nations and implemented as soon as possible."
During the meeting, Mohamad Hasan also announced an additional allocation of about RM420,000 (USD 100,000) to the OIC Humanitarian Trust Fund to aid the Rohingya.
Moreover, Mohamad Hasan also met with the foreign ministers of Jordan, Bahrain, Egypt, Turkey, and Slovenia, as well as UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini.
"During the meeting, Slovenia expressed its desire to establish better bilateral relations with Malaysia. We will promote this, and cooperation will be pursued at the senior officials’ level."
On another note, Mohamad Hasan mentioned that today he has submitted Malaysia’s instrument of accession to the Convention on Registration of Objects Launched into Outer Space to UN Legal Adviser and Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs, Miguel de Serpa Soares.
The purpose of this Convention is to establish a transparent and accountable registration system for objects launched into outer space, thereby enhancing space security, transparency, and international cooperation.
