Stampede Breaks Out at Indian Political Rally: 36 Dead, Over 50 Injured

(India, 28th) A stampede occurred during a political rally in Tamil Nadu, southern India, on the 27th, resulting in 36 deaths and over 50 injuries. Indian Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences in a post on the social platform X.
Among the 36 dead were 8 children and 16 women.
The stampede happened at around 7:45 PM local time. A large crowd of attendees surged toward the stage, and some people tripped over barricades, triggering the stampede. According to eyewitnesses, the venue was severely overcrowded and packed.

The rally was held in Karur that evening, with actor and politician Vijay as the central figure, attracting many supporters to the scene. Vijay, from the 'Tamil Victory Alliance,' was campaigning for the Tamil Nadu elections scheduled for early next year.
The 51-year-old Vijay later posted his condolences on social media: "My heart is broken, enduring unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow. To the families of the deceased, I extend my deepest condolences and sympathy, and I pray for the speedy recovery of those hospitalized and receiving treatment."
