47-year-old Korean “Gangnam Style” star PSY (Park Jae-sang) became world-famous for his horseback dance, but yesterday it was reported that he is under investigation for violating medical law. Police stated today that since 2022, PSY has been reported for obtaining prescription psychiatric controlled substances through his agent without being examined in person. PSY’s management company “P NATION” subsequently released a statement acknowledging their mistake, stating, “Having a third party collect prescription medical sleeping pills is clearly a fault and oversight, and we deeply apologize for this.”
The Seodaemun Police in Seoul received a report that from 2022 until recently, PSY had received prescriptions for psychiatric controlled substances ‘Xanax’ and ‘Stilnox’ (commonly known as sleeping pills) from a university hospital without being personally examined by a doctor, and then had agents collect the medication on his behalf. The police have identified Professor A from the prescribing hospital as a suspect and have launched an investigation, conducting a search and seizure of hospital records and are preparing to summon PSY for questioning.
According to current South Korean medical law, doctors can only issue prescriptions after directly examining a patient, and prescriptions and medications must only be collected by the patient in person. Furthermore, the Xanax and Stilnox prescribed to PSY are primarily used for the treatment of sleep disorders, anxiety, and depression, and carry a high risk of dependency and addiction. In principle, prescriptions for such drugs require face-to-face consultations. PSY has clearly broken the law.
P NATION issued an apology today, admitting that a third party had once collected medication on his behalf, stating, “Having a third party collect prescription medical sleeping pills is clearly a fault and oversight, and we deeply apologize for this.” They further explained, “PSY has been diagnosed with chronic sleep disorders and has taken sleeping pills under medical staff’s prescription, always following the prescribed dosage under their guidance, and has never had others collect prescriptions on his behalf.” Professor A denied all allegations, insisting all consultations were conducted face-to-face.
