PUTRAJAYA, April 23 (Bernama) -- A special assistance of RM300 for each student affected by the fire incident in Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan has been directly credited to the school accounts to ensure their educational needs are met promptly.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said that the school authorities will soon distribute the aid to students to be used for preparing school supplies.

She said that the affected students were also given flexibility to temporarily attend school without uniforms.

"The Sabah State Education Department (JPN) and the Sandakan District Education Office (PPD) have also been asked to meet the needs of students, including transportation assistance to school. Psychosocial support is also provided for students, teachers and educational staff," she said in a statement here today.

Fadhlina said that the Ministry of Education (MOE) is striving to ensure that the best assistance can be provided to all affected students and that aspects of welfare and well-being are given attention.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim visited Sabah yesterday to meet with the victims affected by the major fire tragedy. He announced that RM300 in aid will be given to 454 Malaysian students from 12 schools affected by the fire incident through the MOE.

On Sunday, a major fire in the water village destroyed around 1,000 houses and affected an area of more than four hectares.
