The High Court orders that detainees held under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) at Sungai Buloh Prison and who have been beaten, be sent for medical treatment!
Free Malaysia Today reports that T Harpal Singh, the representative lawyer for 15 of the 32 detainees, noted that his clients testified today (20th) during case management.
“All the clients testified, detailing how they were beaten, which parts of their bodies were injured, and who the perpetrators were.”
“The court recorded all the testimonies and immediately ordered them to be sent for treatment.”
He added that it is reported that 25 detainees were beaten by prison authorities, and the court also suggested that the detainees lodge police reports to pave the way for a formal investigation.
However, T Harpal Singh’s colleague, Rajesh, expressed concern about whether the detainees would be taken to the police station to file reports and worried that prison authorities might refuse to assist in complaints against prison staff.
He said, according to the detainees’ testimonies, they were stomped on, kicked, beaten, and various parts of their bodies were repeatedly struck with batons.
“This is absolutely ridiculous, shocking, and horrifying. In a civilized country, detainees should not be beaten for hunger strikes, and an investigation must be conducted and action taken.”
In response, the High Court set another round of case management on April 17, with hearings tentatively scheduled for October 15-30, November 2-6, and November 9-22 next year.
It is reported that the detainees had gone on a hunger strike this month, and their families had also gone on a hunger strike outside Sungai Buloh Prison after being refused visits, urging the government to abolish the act.
