(Phnom Penh, 23rd) Latest data from Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism shows that in the first seven months of this year, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Cambodia soared by 48.2% year-on-year, becoming the main driving force for the growth of international visitors.

According to a report released by the ministry on Friday (22nd), from January to July, Cambodia received a total of 3.71 million international visitors, of whom Chinese tourists accounted for 687,509 visits, making up 18.5% of the total and ranking as the third-largest source country.

Tourism Minister Sok Soken stated that this year is the “Cambodia-China Tourism Year,” which has provided a significant opportunity for Chinese tourists to visit Cambodia. He said: “Statistics clearly show that the continued influx of Chinese tourists and investors is crucial for the future development of Cambodia’s tourism industry.”

According to a report by the Phnom Penh Post, Thailand is still Cambodia’s largest source country for tourists. However, affected by the Thai-Cambodian border conflict, the total number of visitors in July dropped by nearly 40% year-on-year, with Thai tourists plummeting by 90.5%. In contrast, the number of Chinese tourists grew by 35%.

Angkor Enterprise revealed that in July, only 128 Thai tourists purchased tickets to visit the Angkor Wat heritage site, while nearly 6,000 Chinese tourists visited Angkor Wat in the same period, forming a sharp contrast.

As for Vietnamese tourists, although numbers fell by 19% year-on-year in July, Vietnam still ranked as Cambodia’s second-largest source country.
