(Miri, 28th) Sarawak Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin witnessed the handover ceremony of the upgrading works authorization at the Sungai Tujuh Checkpoint in Miri today.

Lee stated at the event that after years of effort and discussion, this project was finally approved last year by the Sarawak Premier for funding to address the checkpoint's congestion issues.

He mentioned that the work commenced on the 10th of this month and is expected to be completed by December 9th, with a project duration of 9 months and a cost of over RM 3.57 million.

He also urged the  Public Works Department to monitor the progress of the project to ensure it is completed within the budgeted timeframe.

"The Sungai Tujuh Checkpoint is a major gateway to Sarawak, and long-term plans need to be implemented to improve existing facilities to handle the increasing traffic in the future. I have already suggested to the federal government to prioritize funding for this initiative."

According to immigration statistics, as of February this year, a total of 398,628 people have entered and exited Sarawak through this checkpoint, including not only Bruneians but also individuals from other countries.

The upgrading works reportedly include new lanes and resurfacing projects, comprising premixed roads at immigration and customs lanes, roadside drains, additional immigration and customs counters (8); construction of public restrooms (6 for each gender); demolition and reconstruction of existing fishbone-shaped customs counters (10), and the construction of an open metal canopy and covered walkway.
