OpenAI Launches Teen Version of ChatGPT with Enhanced Safety and Regulatory Measures

OpenAI’s well-known chatbot ChatGPT launched a new version tailored for teenagers on the 18th, featuring strengthened safety mechanisms and regulatory measures.

ChatGPT has previously been accused of leading some users to self-harm, resulting in criticism of OpenAI and ongoing legal action.

The Teen version of ChatGPT (ChatGPT for Teens) is automatically applied to users who indicate their age as 13 to 17 during registration, as well as those whom the company identifies as minors based on usage patterns or account age.

Most of the safety measures adopted in the Teen version of ChatGPT are already in place for accounts registered by minors, such as restrictions on content related to self-harm, violence, eating disorders, and explicit sexual descriptions.

OpenAI stated that the Teen version of ChatGPT will also provide more frequent break reminders, enforce mandatory quiet times during usage, and use guided questioning instead of providing direct answers for learning modes to help teenagers better understand the material.

Additionally, the Teen version of ChatGPT will prohibit the chatbot from implying it has personal feelings towards the user or claiming to possess consciousness. Certain features, such as voice mode, will also be disabled.

Parents can choose to link their accounts with those of their teenage children. If the system detects conversations involving self-harm or suicide and other high-risk situations, parents will receive notifications. These parental notifications will be reviewed by humans, and specific details of the chat records will be removed to protect privacy.

OpenAI is currently embroiled in several wrongful death lawsuits, including one brought by the parents of 16-year-old Ryan, who allegedly committed suicide following ChatGPT's advice.
