The first section of Bangladesh's first fully enclosed expressway, invested and constructed by a Chinese enterprise, has officially opened to traffic. Bangladeshi officials believe that the capital Dhaka, with its dense population, urgently needs such roads to ease traffic congestion.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the first 18-kilometer section of the Dhaka Ring Expressway, the first fully enclosed expressway in Bangladesh, invested and built by a Chinese enterprise, officially opened to traffic on Sunday (August 24th). It will alleviate traffic congestion in the capital Dhaka and inject new impetus into the vitality of the regional economy.
On Sunday, Fazlul, the interim government's Road Transport, Bridges, and Railway Adviser, remarked at the opening ceremony that this project holds significant importance for Dhaka and other densely populated cities, and that Bangladesh urgently needs such roads to relieve traffic congestion.
According to Xiao Zhiming, Chief Executive Officer of Dhaka Ring Expressway Development Co., Ltd., the project introduced Chinese technology and standards during construction, providing good solutions for local sustainable development and road infrastructure. The technical and managerial local talents trained by the project will also continue to propel Bangladesh's transportation infrastructure development.
The Dhaka Ring Expressway project is invested, constructed, and operated by Sichuan Road & Bridge Construction Group Co., Ltd. (SRBG) of Shudao Group. It is approximately 48 kilometers in total length with a total investment of USD 412 million (about MYR 1.732 billion). The project is located in the eastern part of the Dhaka Division, connecting the northern and northeastern industrial zones of Bangladesh, linking multiple national highways, and serving as a key corridor connecting Dhaka to Chittagong, the country’s second largest city.
As a mega-city with a population exceeding 20 million, Dhaka has long faced persistent traffic congestion, severely restricting economic development and improvements in people's livelihoods. Estimates suggest that upon full opening of the Dhaka Ring Expressway project, travel times for routes that previously took four hours will be cut by at least half.
