The much-anticipated '2025 Data Sharing Act' officially takes effect today, marking a significant milestone in Malaysia's history.
This crucial act was passed at the end of last year through a third reading in both houses of parliament, aiming to provide a legal and organized framework for the safe and efficient data sharing between departments and federal government agencies.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh stated in a press release today that the '2025 Data Sharing Act' establishes a process that regulates how federal agencies request data and how these requests are handled.
He said that, upon receiving the relevant application, the National Data Sharing Committee will conduct a rigorous assessment based on the standards set out in the Act to decide whether the requested data can be shared.
“This mechanism not only promotes accountability but also ensures the security of personal data.”
He stated that the government formulated this new act to enhance the efficiency of public services, enabling government departments to access shared data in real-time, thereby expediting the decision-making process and improving the coordination and operation of public services.
He said that data sharing and analysis are crucial for technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), especially in developing applications in fields like healthcare, agriculture, and urban planning, facilitating the creation of innovative and feasible solutions.
“Through this legislation and the establishment of the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO), the vision of the competent government to build an AI nation will be further accelerated.”
Additionally, the '2025 Data Sharing Act' will also create a more interconnected and data-driven government, benefiting all citizens, ensuring public welfare, and promoting national economic growth.
“I urge state governments to also formulate similar legislation to promote data sharing between federal, state, and local government agencies, bringing benefits to the entire country.”
Gobind Singh said: “We are also in discussions with industry participants to explore establishing mechanisms to achieve the goal of data sharing between the government and the industry in the near future.”
He pointed out that this move will promote broader application of technology, data-driven governance models, and the implementation of future technology solutions, thereby helping our country to better leverage the advantages brought by technology for the benefit of the people, moving forward.
