EU Reimposes Sanctions on Iran

Published at Sep 30, 2025 04:31 pm
The Council of the European Union issued a statement on the 29th, announcing the decision to reimpose a series of sanctions on Iran.

These sanctions had previously been suspended following the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (the Iran nuclear deal) in 2015.

The statement said that the reimposed measures include travel bans on individuals, asset freezes on individuals and entities, as well as prohibitions on providing funds or economic resources to those listed.

According to the statement, in terms of trade, the EU will continue to maintain its embargo on weapons exports to Iran, prohibit the transfer of materials and technologies to Iran that can be used for uranium enrichment and reprocessing activities, ballistic missile programs, and ban the import and transport of Iranian crude oil, natural gas, petrochemicals, and petroleum products. In the financial sector, the EU will re-freeze the assets of the Central Bank of Iran and major commercial banks. In the transportation sector, the EU will ban Iranian cargo flights from entering airports in EU countries and prohibit providing maintenance and services for Iranian cargo planes or vessels transporting banned goods.

On August 28, the Iran nuclear deal participants—the UK, France, and Germany—notified the United Nations Security Council, citing Iran's violation of the nuclear agreement and triggering the “snapback sanctions” mechanism. According to this mechanism, unless the Security Council adopts a resolution to continue lifting sanctions on Iran, the UN sanctions imposed on Iran prior to 2015 will be restored within 30 days.

On September 26, the UN Security Council voted on a draft resolution aimed at extending the 2015 comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue and endorsing Resolution 2231 adopted by the Security Council in support of that agreement. However, the draft resolution was not passed.
