Russian Siblings Killed in Thailand; Suspect Also Involved in Family-of-Three Murder Case

(Thailand, 2nd) Two suspects alleged to have killed two Russian siblings in Chonburi province, Thailand, have been arrested and have confessed to the crime, unexpectedly exposing another tragedy involving a recently missing family of three.

According to the Bangkok Post, Thai Prime Minister Anutin said these brutal murders are equivalent to "strangling the entire country" as they undermine public confidence and tarnish the nation's reputation.

Reports say the suspects, 43-year-old ex-convict Thana and 39-year-old Thongchai, were arrested on Friday (the 31st) in Sa Kaeo province, and later taken by police to the burial site connected to the Russian siblings in Chonburi province. Pattaya court had previously issued arrest warrants for both men.

According to Region 2 Police Commissioner Chatchai, the burial site is located in a forested area in Huai Yai, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi, about two kilometers from where the crime happened.

The siblings were 22-year-old Diana and 17-year-old Roman. They had come to Thailand from Russia in 2021, living with their mother who had been settled in Pattaya for three years. The siblings went missing after leaving home on a motorcycle from Pattaya on the morning of July 26th.

During questioning, Thongchai stated that on the morning of the 26th, he was sitting on the back of a motorcycle driven by Thana, following the Russian siblings. Later, the siblings parked their motorcycle by the roadside and Thana got off to speak with them. Thongchai claimed he did not know what they talked about, but then heard two gunshots.

Thongchai claimed that after the shooting, Thana ordered him to dig a hole with a shovel and threatened, "If you don't do it, you should know what will happen to your wife and family."

Thongchai said he had no choice but to comply, admitting he was under the influence of drugs and "not in a clear state of mind." He acknowledged his involvement in burying the bodies and led investigators to the burial site. The burial location was close to where the dismantled motorcycle was also buried.

Thana confessed to shooting and killing 17-year-old Roman and beating his sister to death. He insisted he did not sexually assault Diana, claiming the motive was to rob them of their motorcycle.

The siblings' remains were found buried together in a pit about one meter deep. The sister showed signs of assault, and the brother had gunshot wounds to his head and abdomen. Both were found lying flat, not wrapped or covered, and fully clothed. Police said initial exams found no evidence of sexual assault on the female victim.

Three Bodies Found at Second Burial Site

After the two suspects took police to the burial place of the Russian siblings that night, they then led officers to another burial site. Police found three bodies at the second site: a father, mother, and daughter, missing since July 7.

Law enforcement found them buried together in the same pit. Thana confessed to killing this family, who also lived in Bang Lamung, saying robbery was his motive.

Investigators later arrested two more suspects, named Chatchanan and Asadang.

According to confessions, the suspects posed as police to enter the victims' home, handcuffing the husband and wife. The couple's daughter later returned from a convenience store and was also detained. Investigators believe the suspects then took the three to another location where they were shot and buried.

The murdered woman's sister, Tukta, spoke tearfully to reporters on the night of the 31st, saying that since her sister's family went missing, the family had been desperately searching for them.

She said the family's car, motorcycle, and other belongings remained at the house, with no sign of fighting or looting.

All this time, relatives had kept feeding the family's dog in the house and tried calling the family's phones many times, but never got a response.

Tukta said they had done everything possible to find their missing relatives, including filing a missing persons report, liaising with police, and contacting mobile phone operators. However, since some information could only be obtained by law enforcement, they were unable to access it.

She said that if it had not been for the police investigation into the murder of the Russian siblings, the family might never have learned the fate of her sister, brother-in-law, and niece.

Police are currently continuing to verify Thana's confessions and investigating his involvement in other crimes.
