SIBU,15 Mei: The University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) will host a public health event themed, ‘Prevent Today, Prosper Tomorrow’, at its campus here from 9 am to 3 pm on May 17 (Sat).
According to UTS deputy vice chancellor, Prof Dr Mohammad Shahril Osman, the event, organised in collaboration with Sibu Hospital and the Sarawak Midwives Association (SMA) Sibu Branch, is open to the general public free of charge.
“This initiative reflects UTS’s deep concern and proactive commitment toward promoting health and wellness – not only among the students, but also within the wider Sibu community.
“As we navigate the fast pace of modern life, we are witnessing an alarming rise in unhealthy lifestyle. From over-dependence on fast food and sedentary routines, to the excessive use of digital devices, these trends are significantly affecting both physical and mental wellbeing – particularly among the younger generation. These are challenges that we cannot afford to ignore,” he told a press conference held at UTS’s Senate room today (May 14).
Shahril stressed that UTS’s responsibility as an educational institution extends far beyond the delivery of academic knowledge and technical skills.
He highlighted that UTS believes in shaping holistic individuals, which include equipping the students with essential health awareness to help them lead balanced healthy lifestyles, empowering them to become responsible future leaders – the pillars of the nation, and importantly, addressing the health inequalities that persist within the Sibu community.
“That is why this public health event is a meaningful platform for us, By co-organising with Sibu Hospital and SMA Sibu branch, we aim to strengthen collaboration between government institutions, professional NGOs, and higher education institutions through impactful corporate social responsibility (CSR),” he said.
The event will include health screenings, wellness talks, exhibitions and interactive – designed to educate, engage and inspire.
Meanwhile, Shahril expressed UTS’s appreciation to various generous sponsors whose support has made the event possible, both in monetary contributions and in-kind sponsorship.
The sponsors include are Ta Ann Holdings Berhad, Syarikat Sri Minyak Tenage Sdn Bhd, Jumbo Grocer (Sibu) Sdn Bhd, Mafrica Corporation Sdn Bhd, Farley (Sibu) Sdn Bhd, Sunlight Pharmacy Sibu, Pharmaniaga Bhd, Yakult (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Alpro Alliance Sdn Bhd, Borneo Plux Sdn Bhd and NRA Wealth Consultancy.
Pointing out that their commitment to community health and well-being is truly commendable, he said UTS is grateful for their support in making the event a reality.
“Together, with strong partnerships and shared responsibility, we believe we can build a healthier and more resilient society.
“Let us remind ourselves. When we invest in prevention today, we secure a prosperous tomorrow. We look forward to welcoming everyone to participate in the event,” Shahril added.
