KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 (Bernama) -- The directive to prioritise locally made materials and products for official government events is viewed as a strategic move to stimulate national economic growth, particularly by supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Association of Malaysia president Dr Chin Chee Seong said the move is timely and will greatly benefit local SMEs, particularly manufacturers of packaging materials such as eco-friendly paper cups and plastic alternatives, by providing a much-needed boost.
He said that by sourcing from local manufacturers, the government is not only reducing dependence on imports but also stimulating domestic production and encouraging greater investment in the local manufacturing sector.
Chin added that consistent demand through government programmes could help local manufacturers achieve economies of scale, enhancing competitiveness, improving product quality, and potentially opening up opportunities for export.
“The government’s support through clear and strategic procurement policies could play a pivotal role in shaping a more resilient SME ecosystem,” he told Bernama when contacted here today.
A circular dated June 16 stated that the Cabinet, in its meeting on June 11, agreed that all ministries, government departments and agencies must prioritise the use of locally produced materials and goods when organising events, functions, meetings, conferences, seminars, and workshops.
This directive covers areas such as catering menus, decorations, equipment, and souvenirs, with the aim of boosting the local handicraft and goods industry while promoting Malaysia’s rich culinary diversity.
Advisor to the SME Association of Johor Selatan, Teh Kee Sin, said that support from government departments and agencies in using local products could generate direct demand for domestically made goods.
“This is a timely opportunity and a move that is strongly welcomed by SMEs, especially in the face of current economic challenges,” he said.
Teh added that the initiative also offers entrepreneurs a valuable platform to secure more consistent orders for a range of products, including food and beverages, as well as decorative items.
