KUCHING: Sarawak must not be complacent in managing its finances despite steady growth in state revenue, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He cited the state government would continue to work closely with the World Bank to draw on its expertise in financial management and ensure long-term fiscal stability.
“We must not be complacent. Sometimes fortune comes, sometimes it doesn’t. As the saying goes, prepare an umbrella before it rains,” he said, adding that prudent management has so far kept Sarawak on a sound financial footing.
The Premier noted that state revenue has continued to grow this year, though external challenges remain.
“Today, our revenue has increased, and hopefully this year it will continue to rise. But it seems that due to trade tariffs imposed by United States President Donald Trump, there has been some impact on the prices of our export commodities.
“However, with your prayers, I believe the effect will not be too severe, because I already have the figures up to August. With only four months left, God-willing, it won’t be too bad,” he said.
He mentioned this in his speech when officiating the opening of Sekolah Rendah Agama Datuk Haji Mohamad Mortadza Haji Daud here today.
When met by reporters at the sideline, Abang Johari said the tariffs had indirectly affected Sarawak’s palm oil and electronics exports.
On the state revenue as of August, he informed the figure will be announced during the upcoming state budget.
“Let’s just say, Alhamdulillah, the figure is not small. If I tell you now, then what will be left for the budget announcement later?” he enthused.
