(Bandar Seri Begawan, 14th) To enhance road safety, the Public Works Department (JKR) reminds the public, especially cyclists, to strictly comply with the no cycling signs that have been installed on several major highways nationwide.
These signs were installed through collaboration between the Ministry of Development and relevant agencies in order to address the risk of accidents involving cyclists on highway sections.
The road sections designated as no cycling zones include: Muara-Tutong Highway, Limau Manis Highway, Tungku Highway, Tungku Jerudong Highway, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Highway, and Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Highway.
These sections are all highways with speed limits of 70 to 100 kilometers per hour, which pose a high risk to cyclists.
To address this, the National Road Safety Council (MKKJR) has identified several safer alternative cycling routes in each district.
In Brunei-Muara District, the available cycling routes include Persiaran Damuan, Jalan Menteri Besar, and the area surrounding the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex. In addition, as a pilot project, certain routes will be open at specific times (such as Wednesday evenings).
Meanwhile, in Tutong District, a cycling route is planned to open in the Bukit Bendara area; in Belait District, routes are planned to connect to Kuala Belait Port area and Labi Road; and in Temburong District, a route is planned along Bangar Town Road.
This initiative is part of the government's ongoing efforts to reduce the risk of road accidents and to promote a healthy lifestyle in the community by providing a safer environment, aiming to offer more systematic dedicated cycling routes nationwide.
The public is urged to always comply with traffic rules and signs to ensure everyone’s safety.
