KUCHING: The new Sekolah Rendah Agama Majlis Islam Sarawak (MIS) No. 2 here has been renamed Sekolah Rendah Agama Datuk Haji Mohamad Mortadza Haji Daud.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the renaming of the school was made in recognition of the late Datuk Mortadza’s significant contributions to the development of Islam in the state.

He also cited it was an acknowledgment of the late figure’s service in spreading Islamic understanding and in developing the community and the state.

“So, we named this school after him because of his contributions and service to Sarawak, especially in spreading Islamic knowledge, whether directly or indirectly,” he said when officiating the opening of the school today.

Meanwhile, the new school began operations in February to meet the growing demand for student enrollment in Kuching and its surrounding areas.

At present, a total of 6,630 pupils are studying in MIS religious schools, guided by 587 teachers.

In line with the growing needs, Abang Johari said the State government will further improve the school’s physical facilities, including safety aspects, by installing fencing around the entire school grounds.

“Therefore, we will allocate RM55.2 million for infrastructure and safety works, including fencing that can prevent threats from wild animals.

“God-willing, this upgrading project will begin next year. This step is crucial for the safety of our children studying here,” he said.

The naming is to commemorate the late figure who once held several high-ranking positions, including President of the Sarawak Islamic Council, Chief Administrator of the Zakat and Fitrah Fund, President of the Angkatan Nahdlatul Islam Bersatu, and Mufti in the Sarawak State Mufti Council.

As a zakat administrator, he strengthened the legal framework and governance through the implementation of the Zakat and Fitrah Law 1966 and the Zakat and Fitrah (Amendment) Law 1970.

In education, he founded Sekolah Dato Abdul Rahman (SEDAR), the first dual-education school in Kuching that combined religious and modern academic streams.

This initiative aimed to bridge skill gaps, produce students with good morals and contemporary competencies, and became an early reference for curriculum integration in Sarawak.
