Beijing Postpones Visit of U.S. Deputy Secretary of War Amid $14 Billion Arms Sale to Taiwan

Published at May 21, 2026 11:18 am
The UK’s Financial Times reported that as mainland China is pressuring U.S. President Trump over a $14 billion (about 55.6 billion ringgit) arms sale package to Taiwan, Beijing has postponed the planned visit of Colin Kahl, the Pentagon's Deputy Secretary for Policy Affairs, to China.

Trump previously stated that he would speak with the person governing Taiwan, but did not specify whom he meant.

At the China-U.S. summit in Beijing last Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned that if the Taiwan issue is not properly handled, relations between the world’s two largest economies could slide toward conflict.
