Fred Cheng entered the industry after winning runner-up in the 2001 New Talent Singing Awards. Having served TVB for 24 years, on the 4th he announced his departure on social media, uploading several treasured work photos and penning a lengthy post reflecting on his journey.
He wrote: “24 years. During this time, I have always regarded TVB as my home. Looking back, I stepped through these doors right after graduating high school. Back then, I was just a passionate yet inexperienced teenager, full of curiosity about the world. And today, this chapter finally comes to an end. Here, I have had countless wonderful moments: the laughter echoing down the corridors, comrades who became like family, and those nights when we poured our hearts into bringing each touching story to life. Of course, there were also tough times—exhausting workloads, moments of self-doubt, and times when I felt my performance wasn’t enough. Yet, no matter what I experienced, I have never stopped feeling grateful for this journey.”
Regarding his departure, he candidly admitted to mixed feelings, comparing it to “running away from home”: “The emotions of parting are strange. On one hand, I feel as if I’m setting out far from home for the first time in my life; but on the other hand, I know I have not given up my initial passion for storytelling—I simply long to venture out into the world beyond. Although the road ahead is still uncertain, I choose to remain optimistic and hopeful. Because the 17-year-old boy from back then still lives in my heart—he is ready to learn and grow again, to find a brand-new way to connect with everyone. Thank you, TVB, for carrying the first 24 years of my career. I am grateful and thankful to everyone who has walked this road with me. Here’s to new beginnings and to opportunities for collaboration from all quarters—I am ready to embrace new challenges.”
